Five Reasons to Install a New Garage Door

While sometimes your old garage door just needs a coat of paint or simple repairs, it might make more sense to install a new overhead door completely. Here are some reasons why it might be time for a new garage door.

1. Damage

Damage to a door can affect its operation. Bent doors can become stuck or cause more wear and tear on the opener as it tried to pull up the skewed frame. Damage on wood doors will eventually lead to rot, while damaged metal doors may rust. Further, a damaged garage door may not seal well, so water from rain and snow may make its way into your garage and damage any items if have stored there.

2. Energy Costs

Older doors aren't typically well insulated or sealed. This means cold air can leak into your garage in winter, or the garage may become overheated in summer. If you have an attached garage, this room filled with cold or hot air will seep into the home, resulting in higher heating and cooling cost. A well-insulated door with proper weather sealing prevents this from happening, so the garage is more comfortable and your energy costs are lower.

3. Maintenance

Some doors simply require more maintenance and time to keep them in good shape. Wood doors are a good example of this. A wooden door must be repainted or stained every year or two, or the finish will begin to flake off and the door becomes prone to rot. Skipping the maintenance is worse since you will then have to pay for expensive repairs instead. Upgrading to a newer metal or vinyl door will save you the time and money you were previously spending on maintenance.

4. Security

Some newer doors provide more security than old doors. For example, it can make sense to update to a door without windows, since windows can provide thieves with access to your garage. Insulated doors are also more secure than the older single panel types since they are more difficult for a thief to kick in or cut through. Many new doors also have security features that prevent thieves from accessing the emergency pull cord opener from outside of the garage.

5. Curb Appeal

An old door, especially if it is starting to look its age, can bring down the value of your home. Updating the material and design can give your entire home's facade a new look. This is especially true if you have an old vinyl door that no longer matches the color of your home. Replace it with a new door, preferably in a neutral color, for an instant facelift.
